I have me a 67 9.5 johnson that seems to be not openeing up full throttle. If i look at the carb and watch it with the cover off and running on the water it is opening up but seems like it isnt getting enough gas. I have bought a carb kit for it and replaced the needle and seat and float and the screen on the front of the fuel pump. What kills me is that after i did that stuff the thing ran mint and took offr across the lake but about 5 min later it went back to its same old self again. i dont know what is goin on with this thing. Thanks In advance Greg

Had a similar problem with a older 135 once, it turned out to be the fuel line. Had a week and leaky bulb and sucked air loosing r's. Inspect the line carefull or borrow a known good one. If its old a new one isnt that much,,,John

If the motor has been sitting alot you may need to go through the fuel system from tank to carb
Clean and repair each area as required.
Systems tend to get gummed up and you need to
be sure you have solved any problems.
Start at tank check dip tube, tank vent connectors, connections, filters, fuelpump, and carb.

Thanks for the replies guys. The first thing i did was clean the carb then it was a new tank then a new line from the tank to the outboard then i rebuilt the carb replacing the needle and seat and gasket and float. Anything else will be helpful. I have even squeezed the bulb as i was going accross the lake to see if it was the fuel pump.

Hi Grog,
Is it a sudden drop in power or a gradual drop in power? If it's sudden, like a switch turned off, then it is likely an ignition issue. Try pulling one plug wire, grounding it and seeing is the motor sounds the same. You can also check your plugs and see if one is running wet. If both plugs look the same (nice light chocolate color preferred) then it is probably fuel If one plug looks significantly different from the other, then it is likely ignition...
- Scott

Does it run ok if you pump the fuel bulb? If it runs better that will help locate the problem to fuel delivery. Have you replaced the fuel pump diaphram? Do it every 5 years or so anyway. You cannot look at the diaphram and tell if it is good. They are cheap and easy to install.

Like already posted, check the fuel line and connections for air leaks and obstructions too.
