Lots of Smoke

Have an older (1970's vintage) Evinrude 65 Hp.<br />When it starts, it puts out lots of smoke exhaust. Carb jets are set at 1 1/2 turns. But,<br />when under power, it seems to run ok...but it hesitates on power up. Gas mixtue is 50 -1.<br /><br />Any ideas?

I would start by checking Compression! May be a weak Cylinder. Also could be it needs a Carb rebuild. Older outboards do smoke alot sometimes, so if it's running well after start-up, I would not be that concerned right now.

Howdy, JBC.<br /><br />Welcome to the board.<br /><br />You may have left over oil from evaporation in your carb bowl, or you may just be getting the normal cloud of smoke on starting a 2 stroke.<br /><br />If the engine performs well otherwise I don't think you have a problem.<br /><br />Good luck.
