I snapped the driveshaft in my 67 20 hp johnson and the splined tip is stuck in the bottom of the ?powerhead? Is this an simple repair or do I own a 20 hp anchor? I tried liquid wrench on the knuckle holding the top splined end of the shaft but am unable to get it to fall out. I have removed the lower unit but the intermediate case or ?cowling? is still bolted on.

Is there any salvage value to this motor if I am not able to repair it?

Thanks
Scott

Hi skduckhunt
Bummer, I'm not sure if there is a sure fire approach to this problem. I would start by removing the power head. Then wad up some rags and stuff them in the exhaust so you don't get crud down there. Remove the bottom crankshaft seal, I might try to drill and tap the broken end. Ether install a bolt so you can get on it with a slide hammer. Or bore clean threw, tap the hole and try to jack out with a long bolt. These are just some ideas. Let's wait and see what some of the other guys come up with. What ever method you choose take your time.

skduckhunt
OK, the last 1 1/2" or so of the drive shaft is held in the bottom of the crankshaft by an o-ring,
providing the o-ring was properly installed by the last person to have the lower unit off. The trick is to remove the the o-ring and the broken piece will probably fall out. This is a best case example, there can be difficult variations. Using a stiff wire say a clothes hanger, very straight with a very short bend and a sharp end try to hook (or determine if the o-ring is still there) the o-ring and pull it out. You may be able to see it with a flash light in a dark room. Failing this approach, it's pull the powerhead and pick it out. Somehow I was always able to get it out without pulling the p/h. Good luck.
Backfire ;)

Hi Duckhunt
Just like anything else, if you don't need it,your up to your ears in them. But when you do need one? A little good scrounging should dig one up fairly quikly. Use price on one shouldn't be too bad. Should be able to make this repair inside the value of the unit, Providing you are a patient and prudent scrounger.
