Re: evinrude fisherman

Ironically, I am working on a motor like this for a customer today. The best way to determine the flow of the water is to have the motor running and place your hand on the cylinder head you should be able to hold it there while going H E A D.. IF it is excessively hot and you cant touch it after 5 min of running then there is a problem. Check to make sure your thermostat is working correctly if equipped some early 5.5's didnt have therms most did... Also be sure to run the motor in a barrel i dont like them ear muff's.. cooling water wont pour from the port but you will have a good strong flow..

Allan

Re: evinrude fisherman

If you look at the motor (facing the spark plugs) above the cylinder head on the left side you will see 3 screws or bolts which hold down a triangular cover. You have mave to tap the cover off when you get the bolts out I recommend a small rubber mallet and it will pop it right off. See if the therm looks in good condition. If you arent sure replace it the therm and gaskets run about 12.00 for everything.

lovell
I don't think you will find a thermostat on your engine. 2 1/2, 3, 5 1/2, didn't have 'til '65, I believe. If you don't have screws right on top of the cylinder head, you don't have one.
Backfire ;)
