Johnson 110 VRO 1988
What is the best plug for the above motor under normal use (cruising, skiing, some ten minute idling in no wake canals)? Also, what Gap.

With todays fuel the Champion QL77JC4 is a good choice. The gap is set fairly well out of the box. You can set it at .035 to .040.

Good luck!

Thank you very much, what of the NGKs? Would the gap be the same for those? Are the Champions stock? You might have guessed, I'm missing my manual (for now).

The NGK's run slightly hotter than their Champion counterpart. They will work fine as long as the motor is not being lugged. If you use them it wouldnt hurt to richen up the carbs some. Especially if you use octane higher than 87.

Good luck!

Actually, the factory recommended plug for your V4 is the Champion QL82C which works better than the original QL77JC4. Gap at .030"

The 82 will work well also. I just like the added cushion of running a slightly cooler plug with todays fuel. Especially if something higher than 87 octane is used.

Good luck!

After I rebuilt the carbs on my '91 90hp Johnson, I switched to the 82 plugs. My particular engine runs better with them than with the 77 plugs. Maybe just the way my carbs are set now.

Dhadley has a good point about the cooler plugs with today's fuel, though.

Thank you all! I think I'll try out each of these this summer. Or how about a different plug in each cylinder, eh? Thanks again!
