Last week I was out fishing and tried to fire up the motor and got one loud click. She fired up once after about 50 tries and has never fired up again.

Its a 1977 Evinrude 35hp. I checked the battery, hooked up another and same result. One click and that is it. At first I would see the starter try and move (about a 1/4" per turn) and now I get nothing.

I am sure this is electrical but where do I start? Do I try and get a starter? Check the connections? Can I see if the starter works by using another battery hooked directly to it?

Sorry for all the questions but I am clueless!

Jason

Clanton,

How would i go about that? Would I just hook the battery directly to the posts on the starter?

Yes, I have been doing well on Snook but have been really hammering the redfish

Direct hookup from a known good battery to the starter will tell you if the starter is going to work -- lots of sparks, and don't overdo it. (Wear gloves and make sure you have the polarity right.) If you satisfy yourself that the starter has enough life to do the job, the solenoid switch is probably the culprit and needs to be replaced. If the starter is not up to the job, it can be rebuilt.

Does the starter "whirrrr" or just click. If it just clicks your solenoid is probably not engaging, your battery is low, or you have a bad connection. If it whirrs try spraying a little WD-40 on the starter gears. I have to do this five or six times a year on my 1976 35 and my 1992 25 Johnson.

Howdy, JDudley.

I think that your problem is probably not the starter or the solenoid, or even the battery.

Remove, thoroughly clean and reinstall all of your high current cables and connections, and check for rot inside the insulation as well.

DHadley's suggestion would prove that the starter and battery are good. Even as little resistance as 1 ohm in a connection will prevent the starter from turning the engine.

Let us know what you find. :)
