Motor will not start through normal process. A (very) small shot of starting fluid makes it fire right up and run. After that it runs rough and rich, lot of smoke. Carb and lines full of small black particles, looks like fuel lines deteriorating? Removed carb, cleaned, replaced lines that were accessible, sprayed carb cleaner followed by compressed air through the remaing lines. I isolated the diaphram to keep from blowing it up. Cleaned and gapped plugs, reinstalled everything and problems remain. Neighbors boat, trying to help him out but now I'm at a loss. Plastic top on carb with idle adjustment as part of it. Fuel inlet strainer/pump and water pump recently replaced. New, clean fuel and new line from tank to motor. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Probably varnish/Old Gas left in the carb and now things are plugged up. You'll have to take the carb apart and spray carb and choke cleaner through all the passages and probably wouldn't hurt to do the same with the fuel pump. Either way your problem is that the engine is starving for gas.

Re: 9.9 Johnson

you definitely have a fuel problem. Change your fuel. Use Stabil in every tank. Take your carb off and get a rebuild kit. You need to get this carb CLEAN. Make sure that your high speed jet is perfectyl clean. The float is probably stuck. This will come in your carb kit (15.00). Replace the needle valve and seat with the float. When your float is adjusted correctly it will be level with your carb when it is turned upside down.

to adjust your carb screw in the low idle screw (lean/rich) all the way in BUT MAKE SURE THAT YOU BARELY SEAT IT. Back it out about 1 and 1/2 turns. Start your engine and then screw it back in (lean) until it starts to cough like it's going to die. Back it out 1/8 turn at a time and you should find your best idle. Pull the rich/lean knob off and stick it back on at straight north/south. You shouldn't have any problems afer that. I'll keep an eye on your post for three or four days.

DO NOT USE carb cleaner in this engine as it has no lubrication. Use fresh premix at 50:1 and spray it in the carb before firing it up.

Re: 9.9 Johnson

Thanks for the information. I bought a carb kit today and will install it tomorrow. I'll post here again with the outcome.
