Hello,
I have a 71, 18hp evinrude that started running very rich and fouling plugs. Local boat shop wont even look at a motor this old, so I tore into it. Turns out part of the coil covering has flaked off and ruined the seal on the shaft below the coils and points. I pulled the old seal out and everything looks fine with the bearing. Is a new seal hard to put in? What is the name of this seal? This is what is causing the problem isnt it?
thanks for any help

Re: cracking cover on evinrude coils

Kolo..... The cracked coils indicate that they are disintergrating due to old age and should be replaced. Coils in that condition would result in poor ignition, leading to fouled s/plugs among other problems. The seal you mention is called a Top Main Bearing Seal.

The seal is merely a pressed fit and usually requires a special tool to intall it when the engine is still together. However, if one is very carefull, one can press a new seal into the bearing one way ot another. If you were in the Tampa Bay area, Fl, I could do that for you in a matter of minutes.

If you have a problem finding the coil(s) and seal, let me know as I have 2 coils left and a few seals.

The OMC part numbers and approx prices follow:

Coil - 584477 - $33.00

Seal - 305987 - $12.50
