I'm thinking about checking out an evinrude 175 that was under fresh water for 2 days. The engine hasn't been cleaned out or run since then. Any recommendations if this is a good idea. The boat is cheap, but im not sure how bad a project like this can get. What should I look for?If it was under salt water, would it be hopeless? Any advice would be geatly appreciated.

Once removed from being submerged, the motor needs immediate attention or steel internal parts begin to rust (i.e. within several hours or less). The motor's a basket case (rusted bearings, cylinders, rings, etc.) Figure the motor is scrap value only.

HBF4,

If the engine wasn't "pickled" immediately after recovery, it's just about hopeless without a complete disassembly. Even at that, your looking at some expensive parts and labor.

If it has been out of the water and not taken care of right away I don't even think it would be a good parts motor.

thanks for the advice. Looks like I'll skip it. No point in buying a cheap nightmare.

A very good old friend of mine[82years young]who has been around boats all his life has always said "always buy a new motor and sell the 2nd half". I used to listen to this man and always bought a new motor for a used boat, except for this past summer.Ijust bought the new motor.
If you feel the boat is cheap make a deal for the boat only

Which 175 is it? What year etc.? Figure all the iron and steel parts will have to be replaced.Maybe not, but plan on it. The rest of the stuff should be o-k. You might buy it right for parts or rebuild.

c/6

Hooty
