for you experienced mechanics: 87 150 evinrude: found bad power pack. Installed new one. The volts at the coils is 220. Book says 250 and the other power pack does read 250 at eack coil. Is that a tolerable difference or should I take the power pack back.

Re: powerpack outputs

Check stator output to pack, and all ground wires.

Re: powerpack outputs

I did all that and checked the coils. The actual questions was whether the 220 volts is acceptable.

Re: powerpack outputs

shipale
My OMC Manual states that the output MUST be 250 Volts or higher. If not, replace the Pack.
EDIT: I should mention that this is if all other components checked out OK. In what order did you check them out, as there is a method to the diagnosis.

Re: powerpack outputs

Are you using the Peak Reading type voltmeter? If not the numbers you give MAY be OK. Just my observations from past postings.

Re: powerpack outputs

If the stator output is correct, and the pack is down 20 volts, and the pack is new one, I would ask for a warranty replacement. The specs are min. voltages. What manual are you using? Clymer says 175 volts, Rapair says 130 volts all at cranking rpms. I think the OMC manual says 150 volts, not sure dont have OMC manual this engine.
With the information provided 220 volts not acceptable to me

Re: powerpack outputs

What kind and brand of meter are you using to measure the voltage, and are you reading cranking voltage (plugs in or out?) or running voltage? If you are not using the STevens, MercTronic, ESI, or the CDI adapter, you may not have accurate results. Is the battery fully charged and the starter in good shape?

Did you install a genuine Bombardier factory new pack, or is it an aftermarket version such as a Rapair, Sierra, etc.?
