I started my 1995 70hp johnson for first time in two months. Had stabalizer in it. Smoked like a freight train and black frothy sludge coming out exhaust. Motor seemed to run at high rpm but won't run at idle. Ran great last time out. Oily sludge everywhere. Would very much appreciate your help. PS. ran it with muffs.

bsayers,
sounds like your VRO is supplying too much oil to the engine. Disconnect the oil line, AT THE MOTOR, that comes from the oil tank and cap the fitting on the motor. Mix the oil in your gas tank at 50:1 and see how it runs.(You will probably hear the warning horn, as the electrical parts are still hooked up, but that's OK)If it clears up, you may need to rebuild or replace or remove the VRo pump all together. Let us know how it goes.

EDIT: Also plug the line from the tank to prevent oil from leaking oil everywhere. A nicely sized screw will work temporarily.

this is not a VRO engine. You mix your gas and oil. I have only owned this boat and motor for a short time but I know this isn't a VRO system.

bsayers,
If no VRO,then, was the motor fogged out when put away?It may be excessive fogging oil burning off. This may cause the motor to run at higher rpm's until it has cleaned itself out.Let it run a while....

Also its not unusual to need new plugs after you run the fogging agent out. Not always but something to keep in mind.

Good luck!

The motor wasn't fogged. I took it to place of purchace to have some warranty work done. It took much longer to have work completed due to manufacturer disagreements. So didn't fog because didn't plan on being there that long and place of purchace is 200 miles out of town. So no fogging treatment.

only boat stuff. No motor work. I bought the party barge new but bought the motor used. It ran great all summer with no problems at all. I wonder if float stuck, carbs gummed, jet plugged?

If the motor sat with gas in the carbs from summer you may need to tear down/clean out.Try a fresh gas/oil mix first with NO stabilizer. Are you sure there is NO vro pump on motor and No oil tank on the boat?

Re: sludge in exhaust and won't idle

Well there isn't a oil tank or anything that I have seen. I have been all over the boat with a fine tooth comb. I have been all over the motor. I will say this. there is a second blocked off line that goes where the gas goes into the motor. Maybe at one time. there might have been a oil pump and tank but must be bloked off. By the way, I appreciate all of you guys trying to help me. :)

Try this. Worked for me when I had similar problems with a 93 Evinrude 50. Just replace the fuel line. Probably ought to be done every 5-6 years anyhow. It's cheap and entirely possible that is the fix. Good luck Granpa

Bsayers,
That plugged line into the O/B just beside your fuel line is the original intake for the vro oil injection. Just make sure it is still plugged up and continue 50:1 premix. As far as your problem, have you pulled plugs and inspected them? What did they look like? all the same? I would get new gas/oil, change plugs out if questionable, and then drop boat in water and let it warm up thoroughly to run out old gas/stabilizer in carbs. THen I would consider other solutions after that. Good Luck

Take it out on the Water and run the heck out of it. It's just gonna load up more on the muffs. That should clear it up.
