1965 33hp Evinrude - armature plate shaking

I bought this 1965 outboard and it starts very well but at lower RPM's it stops by itself. I have observed that the armature plate is shaking quite a lot (I have an electric start model). When I hold the armature plate steady by manually grabbing the wires (so the plate stops shaking around) the engine runs great. I wonder is there a missing spring or other part that could stabilize the armature plate? If so what is it callrd and where could I find it?

Thank you very much,

Michael

Hello Michael
First check to see that all the control linkage is in order. Then I would pull the flywheel and have a look. Check for rubbing on the mag, coils. Check all screws are tight. Remove stator plate and check if the delrin ring screws are tight. With close inspection you should be able to determine the cause of the problem. Then we can tell you what to do about it.

Re: 1965 33hp Evinrude - armature plate shaking

While remodelling my '62 28hp Johnson (rx-10) I ran into the same problem. I went to the local outboard boneyard and picked through a pile of armature plates with bearings until I found the best one (most were loose). Unfortunetly, once the old grease was cleaned off it turned out to be as loose as the original one. It seemed like most of the play was coming from the retainer bearing at the bottom of the armature plate. Having nothing to loose, I carefully filed the ridge on the bottom of one of the armature plates where the screws (phillips) that clamp the brass slider came through, reassembling and checking the action and clearance frequently. After about an hour fooling around I was able to get the plate turning nice and smooth with little play.

I suspect this is a common problem, owing to the ignition system being grounded through this bearing (brass and aluminum) in preference to the inner bearing (brass, steel and aluminum) in a salt water environment. I ran a heavy ground wire between the coils and a point on the block hoping to send most of the current through it and minimize electrolytic action at the bearing.

Hope this helps, and do everything alcan said first.

Thank you very much for the help. I actually went and looked at all the linkage and how the parts should fit and I realized that a metal part underneath the plate was upside down thus creating all the looseneess. I simply re-assembled it all and it's now rock-solid.

Thanks again,

Michael
