I have a 1984 Evinrude 9.9 hp outboard motor and there is no stream of water coming out the back port side of the engine.
I installed a new water pump with no new results.
I found that the thermostat was removed by the prior owner. I dropped the lower unit again and attached a garden hose to the 3/8" copper line going to the powerhead. Let the garden hose run for 1/2 hour with little change in the stream. Put the lower unit back on and still no change. I assume I have a clog but how do I remove the glog?

Try holding the hose to the water outlet/discharge, to backflush the clog away.

Good luck.

Dude
Try sticking something up into telltail hole and see if it is stopped up right there. Also try to back flushing thru the telltail hole and see it that helps. You could also pull the hose off the telltail and look for obstructions and back flush. It worked for me on a 1975 9.9 Johnson, mine does not have the telltail output but the upper water outlet more than doubled the output when I back flushed..

I recently had the same problem with my 115 Merc. Turned out to be a big plug of sand right at the telltale outlet. I pushed a piece of wire up the outlet while the engine was running (in the water) and the sand came out. Had to do it a couple of times though!

Dave

Try replacing the thermostat. You might cause a reduction in coolant pressure at the pee hole when the thermostat is removed. That combined with a slight clog of crud could stop the pee stream. I vote for a wire up the pee hole or take the hose off where it connect to the outlet ant see if you can stick a thin wire up there.

After you have tried all of the above suggestions, and engine is still overheating, remove powerhead and replace the watertube grommet.
