Hey Gents/Ladies....

I searched back a dozen pages or so and didn't see anyone asking the question so I thought I'd drop it in here and see if I can get some help.

I take great care of my 94 Four Winns 190 horizon when it comes out of the lake. I use an orange power type spray cleaner and towel it off. My effort is to eliminate those nasty dried on water spots that sometimes get on the fiberglass. Well, two days ago, I notice, despite my efforts...the first dried on spots were visible.

Since it's the end of the season, I elected to wash and wax the boat. I used a buffer to buff out the wax. To make a long story short...those dastardly water spots remained.

so,

1. how can you prevent the spots from occuring and
2. how in the heck do you remove them?

I was thinking that they occured because I didn't wax the boat mid-season and perhaps the wax was worn off.
Anyway, any products, techniques or insights would be appreciated.
Thanks all!
John

Get some CLR and wipe down the water spots. You can get it at any kmart or supermarket.Do it until the spots are gone. Then rinse the hull and apply a quality cleaner wax or polish.Dont be afraid to use a little muscle when applying the wax or polish. To prevent the spots from occuring you must be certain to rinse the hull well each and every time the boat is used.I use a washing brush that connects to the hose.If you can ,towel or chamois when done.I found a product that worked very very well that I applied after waxing.Formula 303 which goes on like armor all.It put a barrier over the wax.The hull I used this on was dark blue and water spots showed easily if I took a shortcut. The midseason wax is essential.Dont use wax ,use a cleaner wax or a polish. And dont just wipe it on ,work it in.Charlie

Try vinegar. Straight up in the bad sections or watered down on the whole boat. Rinse and re-wax when done.

lol CHIEF,
ya, its the pits. I try to keep it clean and water spots ruin my day.
just wondering gary and crazy, with the remaining water spots imbedded under the recent waxing....if i go after the spots with vinegar now....i suspect it'll ruin the wax job and require a redo.
i'm looking for a site that has the 303 product cheap...suggestions on where you get it locally? like a walmart or something?!
thanks guys
john

jkarch, i hear ya about them pesky water spots. try some ducky cleaner. it's amazing stuff. works good and quick, spray on, wipe off. maybe twice if the spots are bad. i've used vineger which is second best to ducky cleaner. get it at your favorite marine store. it's just called ducky water spot remover, get some, you'll be happy with the results i bet. jim

Any hard water remover should work. I have used Lime away, CLR, and vinegar. It depends on how heavy the hard water is stuck. Worse case I worked on, a boat that had been neglected for years. I used 400 and 600 grit sandpaper and wet sanded over the spots. Bed sure to keep a constant flow of water going to the sandpaper and don'[t go too deep.
P.S. This will work to buff out shallow scratches and nicks on your car paint too.
There is also another type of toilet bowl cleaner c alled "the works". This works well.
