First of all this is my first post so be gentle. Last fall I "inherited" a 16' flatbottom jon boat and a motor. The deal was to repair the boat for a guy. (New floor, carpet, transom, elec. on the trailer, new bearings, paint, Etc) I repaired it and he didn't pay, just disappeared. The DNR and DMV said no problem in registering it, I have all the repair records and it hasn't been registered since 82' according to the old sticker, so now it's mine. The problem is it also came with a Johnson 10 HP Sea Horse, mod:QD-13, S/N:923367 that I need info on. I played with it and got it running (it's rough) by just replacing the plugs and the gas. Can anyone direct me to the best place to find info on this motor. Year?? I have looked for a manual but without knowing the age of the motor I don't know what manual to get. Would be real nice to take it apart, clean it, replace the points, condensors, etc. All in all it looks in good shape. I'm having trouble with my computer at home so if you reply here and I don't respond I didn't get the computer fixed, wait until Monday when I get back to work and I'll answer your responses .
Thanks, Bryan

Re: Johnson 10HP Help!!

Hi Bryan
Hands down, nothing beats an OEM manual. With that said, there are some other options. A lot of times the public library has copies of outboard manuals. Your QD model is very basic, so you may be able to get by with a more basic manual. You may find the after market manuals do not date as far back as 1951. That's ok you can use a 1956 to what ever. There will be some differnces, but the same general idea. All settings will be same.

Your motor is a 52 model. All ignition parts are still available as well as the waterpump impeller.Hopefully you have a good 2 line gas tank. The 50's Johnson-Evinrudes are great motors, very reliable and easy to repair. If you have more specific questions feel free to ask. Bruce :)

Re: Johnson 10HP Help!!

Thanks everyone, my boy and I got out and got it to running, I told him by guessing, alot of old engines where set at .028 gap. Seemed to work fine. If it's like my Harley I can put any Ford or Chevy points in it and it will run. I looked at the plugs, standard Champions. I think I can figure this thing out. Thanks for the help and the leads, I'll check them out

Bryan

Bryan..... Having the points set at .028 will have the engine running at a retarded spark advance. Align the fiber portion of the points with ther flywheel key and set them at a tight .020. Use Champion J6C s/plugs set at .030.
