Hello all,
First I'd like to say how great I think this forum is, I have learned very mjuch from it.
My question is how much a 59 Johnson Seahorse 50 hp is worth. The engine is in excellent condition, runs fine, and has been stored in doors when not in use.
Thanks in advance.

It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It is also worth what you want for it. I would say that motor in good running condition with controls could bring 4-500 if you find the right person that needs it.

That engine had great styling, but suffers from poor gas economy, especially for it's weight.

I would agree with the estimate above, but only if someone has to have a 1959 engine. Otherwise, they might decide to go up a year or two and get a 75 hp model.

Re: 1959 johnson seahorse 50 hp value

I just paid $25 for a 59 50 hp Johnson super sea horse, also known as the fat fifty. Now that was because the guy wanted to get an old boat/trailer/outboard off his business lot. Mine isn't as pristine as yours I'll bet, but it will run and runs wells. Let me know if you need a mate for parts, etc. or if you find someone who wants one or two of these beasts. Perhaps we could put together a package deal. I can see it now...a big cuddy powered by two fat fifties, towing its own gas station/raft!!!

They are big heavy thirsty engines. Not in high demand, as mentioned, in 1960 the 75hp was lighter and more efficient... OMC did not do too well for a couple of years on the 50's... I've seen em real cheap around here when they're available... It all depends on who you find to buy em. Somebody wants something somewhere...

You can try Trixie's in Bayville NJ for parts. They have a web site.

580243 coil is available from any Evinrude dealer. List price is $195.96. Make sure you have the two 510538 insulators, one on each end of the coil.

Now, what were we saying about value???

Hey FR, Didn't that coil have those two v-shaped clips that held the coil in the distributor body? They intentionally grounded one side of the primary, and the other side of the primary went thru the distributor body and connected to the point wire and killer wire, using fiber washers to insulate it from the distributor body.

That's correct, except the primary ground was a wire that had an eye terminal that went under one of the screws for the retaining clips. The insulators I spoke of are two thin sheets of plastic that slide over the ends of the laminated core. Without them, there is risk of the coil arcing through to the case.

OK, I never realized they were seperate items... I only bought junk parts for that motor, when I had it a hundred years ago....

Re: 1959 johnson seahorse 50 hp value

I modified the ign system to make is battery/coil, like my old Ford, since I was too cheap to buy a new coil. When I found Trixie's had used parts cheap, I went back to the magneto ign.
