I have a 1973 Johnson 25 HP model 25R73 with electric start. I just tore it down because it was locked up, and am in the process of rebuilding it and I have a few questions.

1. When I put it back together, do I have to put the electric start back on? The starter is bad and I dont want to mess with it.

2. Is there an online source for parts for this motor? All I have found goes back to 74.

3. Cylinder is rusted, will it need to be bored? Or can I just hone it and mike it? If so what are the size of factory pistons?

4. Can I bead blast the crank shaft?

Re: 25 HP Johnson Rebuild Questions

Hi Nathan
No, you do not have to put the elect. starter back on. How ever it may be to your advantage to do so. Usually not that big a deal to repair them.
Just call your favorite dealer give them you credit card # and they'll gladly send you all the parts you wan't.
Your going to have to make the call on the cylender. It depends on how bad it is. Some motors left the factory with over sized pistons new, some have been bored since. You will have to mic things out for yourself inorder to know. The clearances are what is important, and they are listed in your manual.
I wouldn't bead blast a crank. Why would you need to. If you can't clean it up with a wire brush and fine crocus cloth, you might as well through in the towel. Cranks can be repaired, but you can buy a truck load of them 60's-70's 25hp motors for what that costs.
