Johnson 33hp two stroke twin Model number 33R69A serial number A 60149 Hi board I need some advice as to what year this outboard motor is so I can get hold of a manual to do an Impeller change.Failing that some of you nice people may be able to give me some advice as to how to go about this impeller change ? Do I need to look at the thermostat If it has one ? I am quite an able spanner twister but have had no dealings with outboards before.one other thing this boat had the kill switch near the forward control, I reinstalled it to it's original place in the motor to the exact same wires but it no longer works. all I can think of is that the new switch I put in place has a plastic body there for has no earth to the motor body ? Thanks in advance for your help safe boating to all :)

Tarron

33R69A = 1969 33 hp.
Manuals at the bottom left of this page, which you will need to pull the lower unit and replace the water pump. As for the kill switch, when you don't have the lanyard in place, it basically grounds the ignition system to kill the engine. So, when the lanyard is in, it's an open circuit. When not installed, it's like connecting 2 wires together which form a ground, in the simplest terms.

Thanks Rick for your help. I thought the 69 was 1969 never the less a second opinion is never out of place.;-) Cheers mate.This old motor still purrs like a kitten so best I do the right thing by it and keep it going for another 34 years.One other small question what is the proper fuel mixture ratio for this motor does anyone know ? I have been running it on the oily side 25/1 as I was not sure.

Tarron,

I believe your engine is too old for a kill switch lanyard. If my memory serves me, the kill switch (button) was located in the engine pan on the front of the engine.

When the kill button was pushed, it grounded the ignition system. One of your wires needs to go to a ground (earth).

Re: Johnson 33hp two stroke twin impeller

Thanks for your replys Spike and Djohns.Your memory is correct Djohns :) ) and one of the wires is to ground the other runs to what I would think would be the coil? or magnito? up under the flywheel (not sure if that is the correct term for it).Someone had taken the button from its normal position and installed it near the forward controlls. I reversed the process cutting the wires back to normal length and installed a new plastic bodied button to it's original position. I never touched the wires except at the button end to connect them to the new button. When I test ran the motor to check the impeller found that the kill button did not work and had to stall motor with the choke.on all 3 starts.It was working when it was near the forward controlls. so I am lost as to why. Except that the original button body would have been metal where as this one is plastic there is nothing different.Thanks again.

tarron,

Do you have an ohm meter? They're cheap, if you do not.

Check continuity of the switch in both positions. If it is "open" in both positions, the switch is the problem.

Also, you mentioned a "new" switch. I believe the original switch was a normally "open" switch. Is the new one configured that way?
