I used to have an 18 evinrude and had no problem rebuilding its LU. Now my
78 Evinrude 35 has excessive play in the shifter handle. I need to take it apart to see
what's worn out and replace it. Problem is, it's a one piece housing and I can't figure
out how to get the guts out.
Can anybody clue me in?

Get a shop manual and a parts list ... it should take away all the mystery.

I tried to get a shop manual from a couple different places, but they both told me they only go back to 1980.

Hi Busted,

Have you looked at after market manuals?
I like Seloc better then Clymer.

You can probably get one at the iboats link at the bottom of the page. If not there then maybe E-bay. Else at Amizon.
Else:
http://www.maxrules.com/fixbooks.html

http://www.kencook.com/

Good Luck

Re: 78 Evinrude 35 lower unit

Could someone just please answer my question? All I want to know is how to extract the gear assembly from the housing, so's I can buy whatever is worn out.
I was under the impression this was a technical forum, where a person can ask a technical question and hopefully get an answer. So far, the only responses I've recieved have been advising me to "buy the book". Money's kinda tight right now and I'd rather put the money into new parts than a book, just for one little detail.
I'd really appreciate it

Hi Busted Knuckles

This IS a technical forum, of people helping others.
Disasembling your and other one-piece housing gearcases takes a puller to pull out the bearing carrier after the two bolts in the exhaust housing has been removed. First clean innerside of housing, where the carrier has to slide out. Advising someone to get a manual instead of just jumping to a repair can be caused by many others whom made expensive mistakes, they could have avoided with a manual. Its not underestimating your skills, only fear for giving
bad advise. Thats it.

Hi Busted
I have to agree with Dane and the others. There's a little more to it than one little detail. How ever I don't think your problem is in your L/U unless you have omited some details. MY guess is worn bushings or connections in the midsection. There are several things a fellow can do for info. The public library usually has a copy of a manual that will work. If you E-mail me at alcan.fixit2@verizon.net I'll send you the pages of a parts catolog pertaining to the scope of your work.

Aha! So I can use a puller on it. Didn't want to until I was sure there was no hidden locking feature. I do understand you guy's concern about the difficulties of fixing boat motors. They are different than other types of machinery.
Alcan, I did check the shifter handle bushing and the shift rod connection in the shaft housing. Virtually all detectable slop is down in the LU. I'm thinking it may be the shifter dogs are worn. Which would, to me, indicate other internals are also probably worn. And I will email you for that parts list if I get a chance today.
Thanks very much.
