Sorry No Go
Looked as if this was a double post, you and someone else. Seems to be working now. It happens. Now lets talk about your motor. Can you post the mod# please. I don't find evinrude making a 65hp in 1965.In order to get you the best info we all need to be talking about the same motor.

Hi No Go
Your motor is a 1973 65 hp model. This makes quite a difference. When you ordered the clutch dog how do you know you got the correct part? Have you checked all wiring and switches pertaining to shifting? Are you using the correct oil for this unit? Type C gearlube for electric shift. This sounds kind of like a wrong oil thing to me. Give us some more details on what your doing and have done reguarding your lower unit.

Not meaning to step on anyones toes here, just wanted to clarify the model year. The model number of 65273 is a 1972 65hp Evinrude Hydro Electric shift model. The "73" in that model number has a tendency to lead one astray.

Re: 1965 65 horse hydro...no go

Thanks Guys for the info on the year model of the motor...I was just going by the info my father in law gave me. OK. To address the problem. When ordering the clutch dog I gave the model number and not the motor info I had. I inspected the clutch dog to be sure it was the same. This problem started last year. I was cruising at nearly full throttle and all of a sudden it jumped out of gear then popped back in so hard I thought it broke the transom. I have checked all wiring and solonoids it did it only in forward not in reverse and it would not do it at idle speed. I tore open the lower end and inspected parts. clutch was a bit worn so I replaced it. The lower unit oil I am using is OMC brand premium gear oil Part number 508182 Please help in any way possible.

Re: 1965 65 horse hydro...no go

That type shift is in forward gear when there is NO VOLTAGE being applied to the lower unit shift coils/solenoids.

In order for it to be shifted into neutral on a momentarily basis, 12v would have to be applied to the green wire.... but for only a fraction of a second due to the fact that the unit slams right back into forward gear again.

It's more likely that the forward gear lobes are also worn. To prove or disprove this, disconnect the wires that lead to the lower unit (blue & green). You might want to wait until you're in the middle of a lake though as the engine will be in forward gear the instant you start it.

Now, at full throttle, if the engine jumps out of gear, there's a mechanical problem within the lower unit gearcase. If it does not jump out of gear, then there would have to be a weird electrical problem somewhere.

Do the wire disconnect test and let us know what you find.

Thanks for everyones help....I tore it apart today to find that the forward gear lobes were badly worn....I called my local evinrude dealer and told me I now have to buy the gearset. If anyone knows where to get the forward gear only please let me know.
