Tacho wire

Hi again fella's

I have a 1975 Evinrude and found the Tacho wire is a metal sheathed cable ( I guess to stop interference) all the way to the engine, but in the engine it joins in a connector and splits into four and goes and wraps around each spark plug lead and is taped on there with insulating tape. From the connector to the spark plug leads it is only a normal plastic sheathed cable without the metal sheathing, is this ok?
Also if the Tacho is not wanted can this wire be disconnected without affecting the running of the motor? One last question, does it matter how many times it wraps around the spark plug lead?

Thanks again
Macca

Re: Tacho wire

The wires wrapping around the plug leads are picking up signals when the plugs are fired. If you are removing the Tach you can remove these wires without having any problems with the way your motor runs.

Hi Macca
Sounds like you have a "Tiny Tach". These read pulses from the spark plug wire to give you the RPM's. Normally the wire is only wrapped around one spark plug a certain amout of times, depending on the engine you have. Disconnecting it will be no problem, if you like. I have heard nothing but good things about them though. If it works, you might want to consider leaving it.
