Re: 87 225 Johnson...horn, stalls

Thanks to both Clanton and OB!

OB, the vaccum line into the VRO is secure with no leaks. Bulb does get hard when pumped with engine off.

Clanton, the entire fuel system upstream of the VRO and sensor has been checked and rechecked, plus I hooked up a different tank (the one from my kicker), running it into the system downstream of the TEE, just before the VRO. The engine still died...does that help narrow it down?

When you say tee, you mean the tee that the fuel restriction sensor connects to? Small OMC fuel tank with quick connect will not supply enough fuel for hard running V6.

What is fuel pressure?

Clanton, yes, that's the tee I mean...

I understand what you're saying about the small tank not being able to deliver enough gas...so to try and compensate for that, I only ran the engine at about 1500 rpm...and I took off the quick connect and just rigged a direct junction into the VRO intake tube..the engine ran, then died, for the same length of time and in the same manner on the main tank...

But, as with the main tank, if I kept squeezing the bulb now every 30 seconds or so, the engine would keep running indefinitely...

Oh, and I forgot to add I don't have a pressure gauge...I will look for one Monday...should be easy enough to find that, even in Mexico...

Hola Gringo.

Just been catching up on the latest posts' to your problem. Spare tank made no difference. Still dies after a few minutes. Another something to look at.....pull the oil hose from the engine with a can or container under the connector and look for evidence of gas in the oil. The oil will be real thin and smell like gas. Has your oil resrvoir dropped in level or have you noticed? I have run across this once or twice. The inner seal that separates the oil and gas chambers of the VRO pump was leaking through real good. While yer at it, pop the hose line from the engine block to the pump off and check for any gas in this hose also. Hey, did you check on getting a service manual yet? This would help you out a lot right now. Be waiting to hear from you. Thanks.

Hi OBJ...

I will try that idea of checking for gas/oil cross flow in the morning. By oil hose to the engine you mean, I take it, the oil supply to the VRO, yes?

That's a good idea to check the main vaccum line from the block too.

Tell me, OBJ, if it turns out IOhave a faulty VRO, is this something that can be rebuildable? They have some VRO parts on hand here at the dealer in Puerto Vallarta, so I sure hope rebuilding might be an option.

And I forgot to add that I did try to buy a manual but this small dealer here in Mexico doesn't have one. Could order one but all orders through this dealer take months. Something to do with customs hassles.

I need to order one from the US myself, if I can get someone to ship to Mexico. Do you recommend Clymers, or OMC, or what? A lot of people have Clymers for sale on the web, but I don't know where to get an OMC manual. (The Bombardier web site seems worthless now. Just ads for some of their fluid products, etc., no matter where you try to click.)

This is just my opinion mtn, if I had to do it, I would get the whole pump. I know it cost around $250 US dollars, but, I would rather have the piece of mind that the whole pump is new and not just parts of it. Kits are still available for rebuilding parts of the VRO. By the way, did you notice if you have a three or four wire pump? Thanks.

I would reccommend the OMC manual. These are motor specific. That means the manual would be for your motor and it would have troubleshooting steps to take for problems like yours plus other info on your motor from ignition to lower units. I would really try to get one. Check E-bay. Sometimes you can get these from there. I can't see the reason for taking so long to get a manual from a JohnnyRude dealer. But then I don't live where you do. A manual would help a TON!!

OOPS...forgot to answer your question, yes, remove the oil hose from where it connects to the engine.

Re: 87 225 Johnson...horn, stalls

OBJ, I've tried a couple of things. First I disconnected the outlet hose from the VRO (which is a 4 wire unit, but with the purple lead unused), then had my wife turn the ignition just enough to spin the engine a few seconds. My thinking was this should create enough pulse to shoot fuel out of the pump. It did not. Nothing.

Then I disconnected the pulse hose (The one from the block to the VRO). Only a trace of gasy oil reside came out. Went out this morning but as yet found no pressure gauge, so meanwhile, I held my finger over this hose end to feel the pulse while my wife spun the engine again. I was surprised at how faint the pulse was. Nothing at all like the strong pulse from a sparkplug hole. Should it be strong and definite...or is faint normal?

Disconnected oil supply hose...seems fine...no gas contamination there.

Soooo bottom line is VRO doesn't shoot fuel out when engine spins, and pulse hose feels very faint. (The pulse hose seems in good shape. No apparent cracks or leaks. I blew back through it and it seems unobstructed.)
