Hi. I need help. My father in law decided to show his love for me by purchasing a boat, motor, and trailer for $75.00. The motor, as you already know, is a 35 horse evinrude, serial #35012 31335. I don't know anything about the boat, but it was last registered in 97. In fact, the guy couldn't even find the key, so I had to put a new ingnition in it last weekend. I got it to turn over, but it wont stay running. From what I've read, I'm pretty sure the carb is gummed up. I could keep it running at the most for 30 seconds, then it would just die. And every so often I would have to pump the ball back up on the gas hose. I had it in a garbage can filled with water, and there wasn't any water shooting out the back. Is my water pump shot? I also drained the lower unit and refilled it. There was maybe two tablespoons of water in it, but when I opened it to drain it both the screws were loose. It seems to have good compression. What would anyone recommend to get this thing running?? I don't know a hell of alot about motors, so I am purchasing a manual for it. Do you recommend SELOC? Thanks for whatever help I can get

Hi Beerly
The fact that you got the thing to start is good. If you could post the model# it would be nice. It sounds like you have a fuel supply problem to me. Can you keep it running by pumping the bulb while its running. I think 1959 was the first year OMC installed fuel pumps on the 35hp. Many earlier model were then updated your may be one. The Seloc manual is a dandy as are all the after market manuals that I have seen. As soon as you get yours and a little help from this board (if needed), i'm sure it won't take long to get things sorted out. Keep us up to date on your progress.

Model 35012 is the 1959 Big Twin short shaft.

You won't find water shooting out the back, especially if the engine has not warmed up to where the thermostat is opening.

To check for water circulation, remove the thermostat cover at the upper rear of the block. You should have water coming out when the engine is running.

You should drain the carb bowl and clean it out. Then take out the jets and clean them. Check needle and seat to see if they're working. I would get a new diaphragm for the fuel pump . If you have to pump the bulb, it's not pumping enough. Another cause of it not pumping could be cracked line from crankcase to fuel pump. This is where the pump picks up it's pulse. Replace any bad fuel line. It wouldn't hurt to pull the flywheel and clean and set the points either. Maybe you've got some spiders living under there !!!

bowhuntr

I agree with Bowhunter on the Carb and fuel pump. I have a 1958 Johnson 35hp that I had to do that too. The fuel pump was full of white caked on gunk(corrosion?) from sitting and the diaghram was so dry it was ready to crack. Bought a carb kit and a fuel pump kit and was all set to go after leaning and intalling kits.
