I have ordered a new standard fuelpump from a dealer so I can remove and replace my vro on my 89 johnson 70hp. I am unable to obtain a manual to see where the new pump will exactly fit. Will the new pump fit where the vro bolts on or is it in a different position, also do i just unplug the cable from the vro pump to stop the buzzer. The reason why I am removing the pump is so I am certain my engine is recieving oil and information i have read it is cear the vro's are a problem. I was told that replacing the pump will give better fuel economy and smoother idleing.
Thanks,Tred

Hey Tred, welcome to tha' forum. If you wanted to do away with the oil portion of the pump, all ya need to do is disconnect the oil hose at the engine pan and put a cap over it. Disconnect the amphenol connector to stop the alarms and use the gas pump portion of the pump. Lots of guys don't trust the VRO's and have done this. Me myself like them. My opinion, if the alarms are checked out and working, you should have no problems. The newer pumps, called four wire pumps, are the best. Just my opinion. The regular fuel pump should mount near the connection that drives the pump from the crankcase. Just make sure connections are tight.

Ditto OBJ.

If the system is maintained, alarms working, it's a great system.

Is this normal because I agree I think it is good handy system the vro but some technicians here down under recommend what i was going to do initially.
Tred

Tred, can you give us an idea of what tone you get? Steady, intermittent. Maybe we can help if we knew which one you were getting. Just to help ya' out....

Steady tone....Overheat or fuel flow is restricted.

Intermittent....tone sounds for 'bout 1/2 second every 20 seconds or so....low oil in the reservoir.

Intermittent...tone sounds every 1/2 second. Sounds uregent....no oil flow to VRO or is restricted.

Hope this helps.

gday OBJ, the tone is short every 1 to 2 seconds and only goes probably 2 to 5 times then stops. this only happens when starting not usually when cold and only at idle.

Tred,

Try cleaninng the system.

1. Dump the old oil.

2. Replace the filter sock. Check tightness of all clamps and hose integtity.

3. Refill and re-prime.

4. Run 50:1 premix until you verify VRO oil useage.

Enjoy!!

Hey djohns, do ya suppose his oil primer bulb may be leaking back a little? Also may try squeezing the bulb before starting the engine.

But what djohns suggested is a good idea Tred. Give it a shot.

You can get a bracket that will fit a standard fuel pump. Look up the bracket in the book for an 83 or older 3 cylinder (pre-VRO. It will bolt to 2 of the crankcase outer bolts on the port side, and the fuel pump will bolt to the bracket. This is the cleanest installation. As said above, the best is to use the stock pump with the oil hose blocked off.

Thanks to all you fine people who had input on this topic. Over the past week I have replaced the oil filter and hoses plus a new primer bulb. I took the boat for a run and the alarm was sounding just as it was before. This was frustrating because I had a fishing comp on in 2 days time.I then decided to disconnect the system and premix my fuel and I must say I travelled about 20 nautical miles over a couple of days and the motor ran superbly and I had comfort of knowing that I was using oil.
Thanks again,Tred
