I have 1979 Johnson 80hp Seahorse model and at full thottle it only does 2000 rpm. What problems could cause this so I could check them out. We replaced the ignition coils on all 4 cyl and could the carbs be causing the motor to do this.

Bob.... Regardless of the problem, always start with checking the compression, should be in the range of 100+ psi and even on all cylinders. Next, with the spark plugs removed, check the ignition/spark with some kind of spark tester. The spark should jump a 7/16" gap on that model on all cylinders with a strong blue flame.

With the throttle set at full throttle (engine NOT running), check to see that the timing base under the flywheel is up against the black rubber cap of the full spark advance screw stop, and that the throttle butterflies are set at full throttle (horizontal).

If the above checks out okay, the usual cause of your type problem is clogged/fouled carburetors. The cure would be to remove, dismantle, clean, and rebuild them. Let us know what you find.
