steering troubles

I have a 1972 18ft Starcraft with a 65hp Johnson motor. Last time out I broke a steering cable and would like to replace the unit. Am somewhat confused on what to buy to replace existing system and if I can expect any problems with doing the repairs myself.

I know a lot of people replace old steering cables like this. They come in all different sorts of lengths. When it comes to boats with hydraulic steering systems the level of difficulty steps up.
