I recently purchased a "in the box" 2000 225 Evinrude FICHT. Any of you guys heard of any problems or suggestions on making it last a long time?

Thanks to all the mates who replied to my post. Especially "Captain" with the specific tech info. I have 10 hours on the engine to date, runs like a Jack after a school of Mullet. Compared to my old 1983 200, the gas mileage is 3X. I will call Bombadier to double check, but my mechanic called about the warranty and did not mention the injector tube faring size. :D

There was a safetty recall on the 1999 and 2000 200/225 Fichts. Make sure the recall work was completed before you attempt to start the motor.

For info regarding the recall, contact Bombardier customer service with the engine serial number at 847-689-7090.

Otherwise, the 2000 and newer models have been pretty reliable - the key is a trained tech who knows how to set one up.

Later,
-John

Re: 2000 EVINRUDE 225 FICHT RELIABILITY

I have a 2000 Evinrude 200HP Ficht. I have only 240 hrs and had to have new upgraded pistions. The ring alignment pins seems to be a problem with this year model Ficht. I am not sure if it pertains to the 225 but if the 200 have this problem, i would be aware. He is right, check out first, no warranty on them. I did have bombardier do the upgrades on the injectors. There was a recall on those because of a fire hazard. adhere to the warning give, DO NOT START this engine without checking out all the problems associated with the particular year model FIcht engine. Just my thoughts. My new pistons cost $120 each and injectors run about $600 each. Just some thoughts.

The '99 and '00 Ficht V6s were the worst engines OMC ever built. Poor engineering compounded by terrible QC.

They will last a long time in the box and a few of them are reliable engines, but too few.

The '01s and later were revised by Bombardier and seem to be good engines.

Bottom line? Rod Knocking said it. :(

CORRECTION, JB,

20% of the '98 and '99 150 and 175 FICHT's without the factory fix, were some of the worst motors OMC built, since the 1964 90hp. The 2000 and later series were the next generation FICHT Ram and they have a good reputation. Proper setup by a QUALIFIED tech is the key.

If it has not been registered before, it carries a 2 year warranty from Bombardier. Like was mentioned previously, see if it had the injector hold-down upgrade on it. The easy way to tell is to look at the bolts holding the injector flange to the cylinder head. If they have a 1/2" head, they are the new ones. Bolts with a 3/8" head need to have the kit installed at no charge to you.

Make sure the engine is propped for 5800 to 6000 rpm, feed it the FICHT Ram oil, and run it like you stole it.
