G_Dane.... The high speed jet for the 1973 25hp Evinrude is OMC part #328546, marked 72D, and of course has a ID of .072 .

One thing more I would like to ask you Joe _ or who knows.

Are theese notorious for fowling plugs when trolling ? I gave this one to my brother in law, it ran fine, but this spring lower plug fouled after two hours, now it did again. Can you clean them. Hi does a lot of fishing and trolling this year, didnt last year. The other day he iddled for 3 hours, almost couldnt get it up in rpm after, now the lower cylinder has fouled the plug.

G_Dane.... Check the compression and spark. Spark (with plugs out) should jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue flame. Use Champion J6C plugs set at .030 .

It's possible the carb needs rebuilding if the above checks out okay, or perhaps it's simply out of adjustment, in which case, see below:

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Thanks Joe - will put the original carb on tomorrow - just rebuild. The fowling was with the 35 HP carb. Compression was 122 on both this spring, before first launch. I will test the spark. We used Champ J4C up to now but as dealer sayes it is no longer available he gave him equivalent NGK. Is J6C the right then ?
