I recently purchased an older 50hp Johnson motor for a reletively low price. But the previous owner said that he is starting it by taking off the cover and using a rope to get it started. It is an electric start. What is the order in which I begin to start replacing or checking (Cheapest, simplist, too most expensive)motor/

Hi aquaman....

Start by getting your self a service manual for the engine. Most generics have a section in it for just what ya' want to do. Check iboats store. They have them.

After getting the manual, set down and study the sections of the manual that cover routine maint. of your engine. There will be sections on fuel, ignition system, and cooling. Make sure ya' cover these sections also. Most of these manuals also have wiring diagrams for trouble shooting.

If you have problems, post it here and there's always someone that will help. Most of all, enjoy the engine!! Good Luck!

There is a solenoid that has two big wires. and maybe one or two smaller wires going to it.

You should have 12v, or batt voltage at one big wire.

With the key to the start position you should see 12v to that one wire as before, also one of the little wires, and the other big wire.

If that was the case it's the starter motor.

If you only had 12v to the one big wire and one of the small wires, it's the solenoid.

If no voltage appeared at one of the small wires when the key was turned suspect the switch, (fuse?) or wiring between the switch and those small wires.

Where can I find the serial numbers on this outboard 50hp johnson? There are four or five numbers on the engine. This is an older johnson.

aquaman,

The model/serial numbers are one of two places.

1. A tag attached to the clamp bracket.

2. Stamped on a core (freeze) plug in the block.
