Re: Can I make a "Pee-hole"? 1974 70hp Johnson

Man, it's Monday for sure    ... sorry for the empty post. Here is my real question, I have a 1974 70hp. It does not have the water tube that shows you are pumping water. I fish the kelp beds and would really love to look back and see if I am pumping water (no kelp over the h20 intake). Is there a safe way to tap into a water jacket and make one with a screw in nipple and rubber hose? Any tips, details, info on this would be greatly appreciated,
Scott

Good idea. Most of those motors had a threaded fitting where you could attach a water pressure gauge or telltale. Try looking on the head or exhaust plate. I'll look at an old triple I have when I get home & post if I find it. Only caution I can think of is to put a jet or some similar restriction in the telltale hose, so you don't drain off any more cooling flow then necessary.

I don’t want to take too big of a chance by putting one in if it isn’t half way simple but by not having the visual pee tube I am taking a greater chance, I have had two buddies burn up motors even with pee tubes so as you can tell, it can happen. I don’t want to kill it that’s why I am depending on some of the more experienced brains on this board. Thanks again and I appreciate all info.
Scott

Why not just add the water pressure guage?

Then you don't siphon off too much water and you also know the PSI as well.

RF

You are aware there is a hot horn in your controls, right?

I would ask the local Johnrude mech where to put it, as they had a service bulletin on the placement of telltales in the exhaust cover awhile back. It's down low on my 1980 Johnson 75hp, but I've seen some up high, too. The placement is actually somewhat critical as it can create/prevent air pockets depending on where the oulet is...

As long as you're using 1/8" ID tubing, I wouldn't worry about draining too much water off, as the later 70s all have the telltales and they all use basically the same cooling system. As long as the telltale is near the end of the cooling water pathway, you should be good to go... Just check with a mech, or perhaps take a peek at someone else's newer 3-cylinder Johnrude (c.1990?) and note where it is on theirs. Best way to do it would be to pull the exhaust cover off so you don't get metal shavings inside...
- Scott

We do it all the time. Go into the water jacket right on top of the exhaust cavity. Screw in the standard 90 degree plastic fitting, add the outlet nipple i the pan and connect 'em up with the hose.

No big deal!

Some are saying top of water jacket, some say exhaust cover. Will the 1/8 diameter be safe in either location if one is easier to get to then the other

h20 pressure gauge? Where and how do those hook up? I would be fine with a dash view rather then turning my rubber neck around and looking all the time. I bet I stopped 10 times to check for water flow. To much time checking not fishing  !!!

Either place will work. They came from the factory in the plate. A bulletin came out to move them on the later models to the top. We like the top because you vent off any trapped air.

The water pressure gauge hooks to the same fitting. You can "T" into the overboard line or screw in a "T" fitting. Your choice.

ledgerfinder. I did see that there was a heat sensor when I changed the head gasket. I just don’t trust electronics that old. That’s the same reason I drive an old truck. Simple!!!! So it has a horn in the control box? From what I could tell it was the two (purple I think) wires that went to a small sensor on the bottom corner of the head. Correct?

thanks again!!!!!
