1989 Evinrude 20 HP Remove lower unit

Need to remove lower unit to replace impeller.<br />Unit is dropped down about 2 inches can see impeller housing. shaft is holding up removal.<br />shift cable and stops are disconnected.<br />I can't see any pin or screw on top end to release<br />shaft. This has to be simple model no. E20ELCem

Did you disconnect the shift rod under the bottom carb?

No I did not see anything under base of carb but will look.

I think the shift rod disconnect is behind the water intake screens on the lower unit on that particular motor. Its kind complicated to get apart so a manual would really help you out.

Walker <br />There is a rod behind the intake screen.<br />It has two nuts. Maybe a locknut which is smaller.

Hi Whitey<br />Disconnect the the two nuts using open end wrenches. Slide the top nut up and remove the plastic keeper from the shaft.
