Hi, Tami.

I believe your engine is a RDS-26S.

Starters do wear out, but much, much more often there is electrical resistance in the starter's high current circuit preventing it from getting enough current to operate properly.

Let us know what is happening so you can eliminate that possibility before you tear into your starter motor. It is a shame to spend bux to fix something that is'nt broken.

There should be a shop in your area that rebuilds automotive starter motors. They should be able to supply you with brushes, turn your armature, replace bearings and even rewind stator or armature if needed.

If all else fails, you can get a used motor from www.twincityoutboard.com

Let us know what your starter is doing (or not doing). :)

The starters were the same for many years. Probably from 1957 to the mid 70's.

You often see used starters being sold on eBay.

Hi, thank you for your answers, We just replaced the ignition, the key was so old it broke off right in the ignition, after we replaced the ignition she started just fine, we used her about 3 times, and the last time we tried to start her the starter started smoking, it smelled electrical, we were out in the middle of the bay when this happened, that is the only problem we've had, now we just start her manually.
Thanks again for your time! :D
Tami

I have a new OMC starter #MGD-4002 made by API (aftermarket.) No bracket. Fits the 40 HP's, early 60's and maybe later. $70.00 plus S/H. We closed our dealership and still have many parts in stock for these older engines. Selling most below wholesale cost. Email for more info:
linda@nu-z.net

Retired,
That sounds like a good deal...I was looking for one for my 1958 Johnson 35 Hp....which I think is the same. They wanted $169 for one....would buy that one in a minute for $70.
