I nad tuned up my 1966 20 hp and after starting it a few times I had a problem, the key way somehow or another slipped and stripped the slot in the flywheel.Luck has it I was able to purchased a used one but I went to the dealer to buy the new keyway.Question is the new keyway has some indentions on it 3 total 2 on the part that would go into the crankshaft and the other could go to the top or bottom.Anybody know which way would be correct?

Re: johnson flywheel

The key way that goes on the crakshaft has 3 little indentions on the side of it.I need to know if it matters if the indention goes towards the motor or flywheel. The keyway I purchased at the autoparts store didnot have them and it rolled out of the slot more into the cam that operates the points and caused it to slip out of the slot on the flywheel and stripping the keyway slot on the flywheel.A very misfortunate mistake
for me.I know this does not happen often but I know there is a purpose for these indentions.Maybe you can help

Hi Fred
Yes it does matter. If the flywheel key has been removed, reasemble to cranck with outer edge vertical. Be sure that the single upset mark on the side of the key is facing down. Incorrect installation of the key will affect cam position and will result in retarded ignition timing. Installcam making certian that the side marked TOP is up.Be sure you torque the flywheel nut to 40-45 ft. lbs.
