I have a '85 EvinrudeV6 175. Both batteries are full. When I crank her over I need to use both batteries. I cant start it on one. If I have the switch on one bat. it wont start evan though it's fully charged. That gear with the teeth on top of starter will only engage then dissengage. But works fine on both bat. Is this something I should fix before is gets worse like leaveing me sit? Thanks for the help.

Re: starter need 2 batteries?

Your starter motor is not getting the power it needs when on one battery.

Either the starter demands extraordinary amounts of power due to a defect or it demands the rated amount but the supply-line somehow is restricted.

If the starter is OK (not drawing too much power to crank the engine), you should start by looking battery connections, cables and battery selector/switch over. If the switch is defective it may prevent sufficient power over one set of breakers thus only starting the motor when two are engaged. Look for points that have been extremely hot as this will happen when the starter demands more power than a certain supply-line offers.

If you connect the motor directly to one battery and it works, your switch/connections are the problem.

If all is OK and your starter still needs the power of two batteries to work, your starter and solenoid needs checking.

Another quick suggestion. YOu can have fully charged bad batterys. Take them to a local auto parts store or auto repair shop and have then load check your batterys. Its usally free but I have seen some places charge a couple of bucks.

I've run into the same problem with my 225hp Evinrude. A bud suggested to keep the batt. cables as short as posable and see what happens.
I did what he said and now I have alot more power to the starter motor. Best of all it was free.

I had a problem like that on a 115 Merc. After I rebuilt the starter, the problem went away.

Had same problem last season on 1987 115 Yamaha. Batteries were new that season, re-charged over night, started & checked charging circuit OK. Two days later replaced starter. All is well.

Re: starter need 2 batteries?

Thats what I am thinking guys. The starter is almost 18 years old and I rememebr when I bought the boat new in 85 that the starter was replaced after the first trip out. I dont have the numbers with me but would rebuilding that starter help or should I just replace it? Thanks Stas

Stassson
I clean and relube the starter bendix first, could be just have some old dried out grease. For sure check the battery cables. I also would check the battery voltage while cranking. Check water level in battery. Check and clean solenoid contacts. This can all be done with no cost.
