200 HP Johnsons smoking alot

Hey guys, I have a 25ft, Hydra Sports with twin 200 Johnsons. The motors have both recently started to smoke excessively, and it is thick blue oil smoke. I was thinking maybe the the VRO pumps were double pumping, but I doubt they would both do that. There are two separate oil tanks and I have not put any oil in the fuel, I know some people do that to be safe. The motors run perfect and do not bog down at all, so I starting to think just ignore it because it is better than no smoke at all. Plugs are cheaper than pistons. Also the boat is new to me, the motors are 1999's, and I have never had motors this big, is it a normal thing for these big 2 strokes to smoke like this. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is normal for 2 cycles to smoke. If they are both producing the same amount of smoke more than likely it is normal as your chances of both engines having the same failure at the same time are rare.

What oil? What spark plugs? Did this just start? Like right after a service or changing something? Thermostats?<br /><br />Good luck!

I just bought the boat this season, and the guy who I bought it from had the plugs changed and the oil in the lower units changed. I know the guy pretty well and I'm sure he put good 2 cycle oil in it, he's not the kind to skimp. The plugs are not fouling because the motors idle great and are strong out of the hole, they never bog down or start hard. The biggest motor I ever had before this was a 150, but it was fuel injected so it obviously did not smoke much, but I was wondering if it is just because they are such big motors with carbs. I guess if there is no performance problem I will just ignore it.

You will see alot of smoke with a two stroke, especially at startup...it is good!

I too have noticed an increase in the amount of smoke produced by my 200. Also the area below the flush port turns black. I recently switched from OMC oil to Quicksilver. Dhadley asked obout oil. Wonder if this condition could be related to the oil?
