I have a 1990 3cyl 60hp Evinrude that I am rebuilding because I melted the top two pistons. The reason they melted is because on an outing with one too many beers, I forgot to check the oil level in the reservoir and disobeyed the warning horn. It is becoming a pretty expensive quart of oil to rebuild the engine! Anyway, I'm trying to figure out the advantages and disadvantages of disconnecting the VRO pump and mixing my own gas. Anyone have any comments or suggestions?(Not about my having one too many beers!!!)

Les,

It's easy to do.

Obviously you know it works, as long as you pay attention to what it's telling you.

You will find more positive opinions, on this board, for disconnecting it. I do not agree with them.

The oil injection systems are wrongly accused for many engine malodies.

Ah...the ol beer goggles! And thats the oil pumps fault how?

If you forget to put oil in the gas - there is no warning for that. Think about it.

Ditto Djohns19.

Thank you for your replys. I'm not blaming the oil pump for my inattentiveness, it's just that I've heard that the VRO systems have had some problems. However, mine has been working fine for 13 years prior to my mistake. Is there any truth to the myths about the problems with the VRO system? If I disconnect it will the motor run too rich at low revs, or too lean at high revs? Can you tell that I guess maybe I'm a little pump shy now that I've just rebuilt the motor?

Les,

Dhadley is one of the most knowledgeable people out there on oil injection systems on OMC's, and others.

The OMC oil injection system has been blamed for more malodies than second hand smoke. Few of them are true.

The largest issues with oil injection systems are:

1. Lack of maintenance.

2. Air leaks in the supply lines.

3. Foreign material in the system-namely water.

4. Non functioning alarms.

Regarding #1. I recommend that the oil tank be removed, dumped and cleaned, once a year. At that time it's a good idea to replace the filter sock. Once refilled, run the main tank on 50:1 (or portable) until oil use is verified.

#'s 2,3,4 are pretty much self expalanatory.
