I have just purchased a boat with a 115 hp Evinrude (115393M), I first thought I had bad batteries. I purchased a new battery today, 625CA/500CCA, I charged the battery and the engine turns over very slow. That is why I bought a new battery. I removed the spark plugs and checked the timing, it appears to be correct. #1 piston up and timing mark arrow is on TDC mark on flywheel. I tried turning over the engine while the plugs are out and it turns over very fast, obviously it won't start because the plugs are out. Two weeks ago it ran fine until the end of the day when i had to get towed in because it wouldn't start  . Am I experiencing an airflow problem or a voltage problem? The boat has not been run for two weeks while I made modifications to the boat interior and rewired my accessories.

Your timing is way off. Get the specs. and set it before you run it. On my 1987 OMC V4s timing is 28 degrees before TDC.

Hi bass....let me add another "look-ats" to go along with solittles good advice.

It could be possible that the brushes in the starter are due for a change out. The stator commutator could be dirty to the point that not enough amprage is being past to crank the engine over. The engine cranks easily with the plugs out cause there is no compression for the starter to work against.

Also, check the connections to the solenoid. Make sure they are clean without any corrosion.

Good Luck.

Sounds like you didn't actually check the timing, but just verified that the pointer is accurately pointing to tdc when #1 is at tdc. I'm with outboard jim. It is supposed to spin fast to start. Might not generate enough spark with a slow spin, might not suck in enough fuel. On the 1st day it wouldnt start, did it crank fast? If you stayed on it too long maybe that fried the starter and you have some other problem as well. Recommend: get starter fixed, then if it wont start, squirt some premix in te carb throats and see if you get any life .

I'll third that on it having to spin fast...my '75 85hp johnson won't start unless it is spinning fast...I believe it has top do with producing spark or something...

Rich

bass,

Remove the ground (battery cable-negative) from the engine block and clean it up. The V-4's were notorious for this ground getting corroded.

Well, the problem has has a band-aid applied to it. The brushes were not making a good connection. I took apart the starter, cleaned it up, resurfaced all the connections and it cranked right up. I know in the near future I will need to purchase a rebuilt starter because it smells inside like it has been getting warm, probably because of how dirty it was. Does anybody know a good place in the Houston, Texas metro area for buying old Evinrude parts?
