Hello to all:
I took my boat out on the river and assume that it would start right up. But before I did this, I put in fresh gas/oil mixure and I change the spark plugs because they looked like they needed to be change.(brown stuff on the end) As I launch my boat into the river this is where the problems started to occur. I don't have a battery, so I have to pull and pull nummours time and nothing happen. I had the fuel gage on rich as a nearby boater told me to try. After many times of pulling the crank cord I tired myself out. Last year I didn't have this problem.I plan on bying a battery but for now I want to know why the boat won't start. Another boater told me to pour a little gas in the carberator as first time user. I didn't know for sure where to pour the gas so I left that suggestion alone. I did have it winterize but nothing was done for the summer. Like I mention, I assume it would start. What seem to be the problem. Here's the information that I have about my boat...

1969 Evinrude 25 hp outboard
the gas/oil mix ratio 50:1
There's a p/n wire to hook a battery to the motor. But for now I usally pull start it.

Thank you

Lets start with the easy stuff.
Be sure the gas connectors are hooked up right.
The latch goes on the pointed pin.
My brother inlaw got his on backwards once, discovered it by accident or we would still be cranking.Squeeze the primer bulb till firm.
be sure the choke is closing right.Does it have a manual choke? if not you may need the battery to choke it.If it is an electric choke there may be a manual choke under the hood.
The kill switch, if any, may be shorted or damaged.Find the wires and unhook them and try.

I will try what you have suggested to me. I never did see if the gas lines was hooked up properly. They seem to snap on right, but I didn't smell any gas while I was trying to crank it up. Also the prime bulb had gotten really hard. Yes, I do have a manual choke which is located in the front of the motor. I have order a manual from iboats.com and I too agree with you on working on any motor without a manual. I will keep you posted om my success.

Thanks

Bernard

Re: Starting my boat since last winter

I want to let you know that I got my boat started. I just needed to allow some water to get into the lower intake unit(using ear plugs) :) and spayed some solution into the spark plugs socket and the carburator and a few cranks and there she goes. Basically, I needed to get some water going through the lower intake unit so that I could get some water into the water pump. There was nothing else that I needed to do. It takes only one pull and she starts right up. Again, My 1969 Evinrude motor sound good and she is ready for the water.
:)
Thank you for your help.

Bernard.

Re: Starting my boat since last winter

I'm kinda confused as to getting the water going for cooling and actually starting the sucker. Gas in combustion chamber should help starting but the water thing I don't understand. If my motor is not getting water for cooling it should not start? Not that I want to start an engine without cooling but is there actually a sensor or something? Sorry to ask a question within a thread.
