35 HP Evinrude, runs and starts sporatically

35 hp Evinrude Model E35ECIG Serial # E0002200First, I believe this is a 1981 engine, but please confirm.<br /><br />It seems like I have a mixture of several of the more common problems, so hopefully this will help others.<br /><br />It takes a long time to get started, and I use the "ear Muffs," prior to launching so as not to embrass myself at the launch. A fter about 5 minutes I get it running and it idles fine with a good amount of water coming out of the exhaust.<br /><br />Sure enough, I get to the launch and to everyone's amusement, it now takes 10 minutes to start, and afterwards I roar off into the river. Then, when I try to run at low speeds or idle, it shuts down. I try and start it again, and it takes about 20 minutes to get started (as if there was no spark). <br /><br />I am really landlocked due to the unreliability, and fact that I might not make it back to the launch..<br /><br />Signed, "He who gets back home via trolling motor..."

check the sensor plate for binding or hard to move<br />if not its the carb

Dumb question.<br /><br />How old is your gas? Are you getting fuel to the carb? Do you have the correct plugs (I think they are QL77JC4 champions (someone correct me if I am wrong, I dont have my book in front of me) Also are the plugs in good shape? Is your fuel bulb on the line pumping up hard?<br /><br />Just a few things to look for

I think the problem was with the sensor plate sticking ( a little W-40 did the trick there), and the idle switch had come loose from losing the cotter pin- so I replaced that as well.<br /><br />The Plugs are brand new. The gas is about 3 weeks old, but it has been raining heavily here so possible water issue eventhough the boat is covered appropriately-I added a little Gas additive that supposedly helps any water "Pass" through the carburator.<br /><br />I have a 6 gallon tank, and I always wanted to know if the vent cap should be left wide open, shut, or simply unscrewed half-way. This probably effects the capability of the engine to draw fuel???

Well, it seems you've solved the hard to start problem.<br /><br />You are correct that this model number is for a 1981.<br /><br />I'm not sure about the vent question. You could also consider adding a fuel/water separator type filter between the tank and the motor to help prevent water problems in the future.

Thanks for the idea...a friend of mine said that the definition of a boat is:<br /><br />"a whole in the water that you throw money into!"<br /><br />Luckily all of my repairs have been quite inexpensive on this good ole' 35 HP reliable Evinrude.
