Hello!

I just found out the motor on my boat is a 1979 Evinrude 140 hp motor. It just got a new head. If it were kept in good condition, what is the lifetime of this motor?? Will I have to buy another motor soon??

Also, does having an engine rebuilt give it a longer life??

I would rather have a 4 stroke because it is cleaner burning and gets better gas mileage. But as of now, the higher horse power 4 strokes and REALLY expensive. ANyone know where there are cheaper ones, like cheaper than 4,000 and higher??

Katie

if the motor is taken care of and serviced right it will last forever.i have a 1966,1970,1972,1975 evinrude engines that all run very well.yes they have had there share of troubles but nothing serious. also as far as the rebuild question goes if its not broken dont fix.i am a beliver in decarbing engines now that i have read up on it and tryed it myself.
here is a nice write up on 2 cycle care
http://www.nicholsmarine.com/2stroke.htm

Hi Katie

An old dealer I once knew used to say: You cant wear out an Evinrude, but you can ruin it by the lack of maintenance and wrong threatment. Seing how many own and use motors from 60 íes, he was right about something. Many motors go out of use from the reason he mentioned, besides simply getting too old.

Katie,

The VAST majority of outboards die an early death due to lack of maintenance or misuse. I have operated numerous outboards that had in excess of 1000 hours and they were still going strong.

If you are not sure about the history of your engine, I would do the following.

1. Decarb. it. Do a search on this board using th search word "decarb" for the procedure.

2. Service the water pump.

3. Check and maintain the lower unit fluid.

4. Check the physical appearance of the spark plugs. They should all look the same as far as burn patterns, soot, etc. If they do not, let us know what you find.

5. Use 87 octane fuel mixed at 50:1 with a quality TCW-3 rated oil.
