Evinrude 9.5 troubles

I recently acquired a 1967 Evinrude 9.5. It's in pretty good shape but it only wants to run when the choke is pulled. I replaced the fuel tank, checked out the fuel line, replaced the fuel pump and cleaned the carburator. It still doesn't want to to go without the choke pulled. Anybody got any hints on what or where to look next.
Hal

Re: Evinrude 9.5 troubles

Because you have to always choke the motor it is obviously running too lean. Here's where I think your problems may be...

Idle Mixture
Have you tried playing with the low speed mixture? Turning it counter clockwise will richen the mixture. You may have to pop off the plastic linkage connectors in order to adjust it out properly.

Carb Cleaning
When you say you cleaned the carb did you completely disassemble it and clean it completly - including the low and high speed passages? An obstruction here could be causing your lean condition. Don't be afraid to take this carb apart in order to clean it out it is a very simple design and reassembly should pose little challange to even the most novice tinkerer.

Carb Gaskets
If the carb or carb mounting gasket are leaking you may be sucking some air causing the motor to run too lean. You might want to tighten first. If you still suspect leaking, replace accordingly.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 troubles

McG
Thanks for the quick reply. I completely disassembled the carb. Checked and verified the float travel, cleaned the bowl and all the passage ways. When I tightened it down I applied equal torque all the way around. I set the idle mixture by turning the knob clockwise until it was seated then backed it off about 3/4 of a turn. Do you think this is enough? There is allot of travel on that needle so maybe I didn't get it out enough. As far as a leak around the carb goes, that could also be a possibility because I didn't change the gasket. Although it looks as though there were no leaks as I disassembled it a second time just to verify that wasn't the problem.

Hal

I have a 1966 johnson 9.5 with very similar problems. According to my manual, the low speed mixture needle should be set at about 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated. Don't know if this will fix your problems, but since it was fresh on my mind, I thought I would try. Good luck.
Dustin
