WE are having electrical problems and my husband found this part, it has three wires comming out of it and one of the wires is fried. On the part it says (in the middle)VARO R315 7229 (around the edge it has the numbers 570885. The model number on our engine is 65ESLR73R. Does anyone know what this part is, and if the part is still available
We sure would appreciate any and all help. Thanks

Hey nick or Mrs. Nick....

What you described sounds like the rectifirer. This takes the AC from the stator and changes it to DC for battery charging and to run the boat.
I can't find the part number for the number you posted but the correct part number for the rectifier is 582399. If the thingy mabob you described has something like a triangular base and a round tin can on top of it, that's what it is.

By the way....your engine is a 65hp 1973 Johnny/Rude.

Jim,
Thanks so much for the info. Nick said that he was not aware that his engine would charge itself. Are we misunderstanding you when you said it changes from AC to DC?
Thanks, Mrs. Nick AKA Lisa

Re: 1972 Johnson Stinger need to know what this part is

Hi folks....

No misunderstanding. The rectifier takes the AC and converts it to DC. It's what is called a rippling DC but none the less DC. Now I'm going to impress the heck right outta ya.

Inside the rectifier are four diodes arranged into what is called a bridge. What this bridge does is chop off the negative side of the AC and only lets the positive side of the AC through. So in electrical jargon, ya' get a rippling DC. And that's really what happens.

Looking at the part numbers for your particular engine, I don't see any rectifier with the number you posted. It's posible someone may have put a rectifier on that could not take the amp output of your engine. Or your stator could have a short in it. Just one more thing before I end this post, ALWAYS make sure you get the battery cables on the right terminals of the battery. If you don't, you will fry the rectifier....literally. Good Luck with your boating.

Mrs. Nick, AKA Lisa,

OBJ gave a very good description of what the recetifier looks like and does.

He is 100% correct, hooking up the battery backwards will "pop" one for sure.
