Needs some tips on Winterizing a 90HP VRO 1996 Johnson....every spring it takes a 50-60 starts, lots of battery juice and ample frustration to start the motor in the spring. What are we doing wrong in the winterizing process?

1)Fogging oil sprayed into air intake-carbs.
2)flushed with fresh water
3)Engine is stored in tilted position.

Nothing wrong with 1 & 2.

Leaving it tilted up, is not a good idea.

Try this, when starting.

1. Prime fuel primer bulb.

2. Turn key to ON-NOT START.

3. Push key in-hold for eight seconds.

4. Release key and crank engine-do not hold key in.

Also, if you haven't serviced your oil tank, I would.

1. Remove the tank.

2. Dump old oil.

3. Replace filter sock.

4. Refill and reprime.

5. Run 50:1 oil mixture in fuel tank until you verify oil useage.

Yes leaving your engine tilted as djohns says is
not a good idea. Here were the winters are cold
can cause serious engine damage. From freezing
water in the water jackets expanding and a cracked
block could be the result.

Krobock,If your engine is to be stored each winter with 3+ months of down time without starting I recommend draining the fuel mix from the carb bowls. This will prevent gummy deposits from forming and fouling the carbs.Upon restart after storage ,purge the fuel line to engine with fresh fuel and reconnect.
