my 1986 evinrude 110 has trim/tilt that works up but not down. Solinoids click and check out fine. All wiring checks out from throttle switch to harness connection and from connection to relays. When throttle switch is in up position everything works fine. In down position wires heat up. TT motor has 2 wires blue and green. When connected to battery terminals TT works fine both up and (when reversed) down.
I think it might be a dead short but have no idea where as everything looks good. I have continuity on all wires in the harness from throttle switch to connector. Does the motor require grounding or is this done internally? Any hlep or advice would be great.

John.... Obviously the PTT electric motor is okay. I know you said that the relays (solenoids) check out fine, however... switch the relays to see if the problem reverses itself. If so, one of those relays is faulty.

If the problem remains the same, then I'm afraid that (as you've stated in effect), a short may exist that you will need to find. Keep in mind though that a short may not exist, but could be a wire that has frayed internally or has a bad connection. This would result in a voltage drop that might resemble a short (hot wires).

thanks for the speedy response joe. I did indeed switch relays and then bought two new ones thinking that both might be pooched. still the same problem. My big concern is that all continuity checks show ok on almost every wire I could find.

Hey,

You say you've checked continuity, but have you checked for shorts?

Does the trim pump motor turn at all? It may be in hydrolic lock... could be a stuck check-valve somewhere. The hot wire may be from the motor overloading trying to turn. My dad and I had the same symptoms you describe on a '77 140HP. Several other mechanics in the area (my dad worked at Chrysler outboard in the 70's) informed us that the new external mounted trim/tilt units were notoriously bad. We've rebuilt ours 4 or 5 times... Hope yours is better than ours -

Tieftoener

I had the exact same problem with my PTT. It worked fine going up but going down it went slow and kept blowing my fuses, (I put inline 25 amp fuses in each side. Without the fuses the wires would get really hot as you stated. I finally took the motor apart, (it's tricky getting it back together), and just basically cleaned it up a bit and lightly sanded the armature and windings, put it back together and it works fine.

Rich

thanks Rich. The TT motor is brand new so I have assumed there is no problem there. I think I will try to rewire everything from scratch, putting a control switch on the dash.
