Your best bet is to buy the services manual..

Re: Water pump removal

Hi Wade,

If it's like my 85 120 hp:

Find a socket, swivel and magnetic insert for removing and installing the shift rod screw.

Use a coathanger to align the screw and the holes when putting it back together.

Make sure no one touches or turns the shift rod when the lower units off, these screw in and adjustment/specs are critical.

Clean the mating surfaces between the lower unit and upper. I have water leaking out of there now. Maybe I should have "flat filed" surfaces looking for high spots.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck!

Re: Water pump removal

I replaced mine for the first time earlier this year. Hardest part was getting at the shift rod to disconnect/reconnect it. I found it easiest to remove the lower cowling. This provided plenty of room to get in there without relying on magnetic screwdrivers or knuckled sockets.

Have someone handy to help you remove/reinsert the lower unit. It's a little tough to hold it in place while inserting the bolts all on your own.

Oh yeah, when inserting the new impeller into the housing, use a little dish soap as a lubricant. Helps get the impeller in there and just washes out with your first use.

Good luck.

Brew

Re: Water pump removal

To make the shift rod screw easier to remove, I drilled a small hole in the cowling inline with the screw.
Then used a 1/4" drive socket to remove and replace.

pbailey

Re: Water pump removal

well lets say the shift rod is moved by mistake, can a lay person do this at home or do they have to take it in and pay the 75+ shop time to move a half a turn or what ever back.
omc made a special tool for this, but what can a back yard mech do????
-
not trying to take over subject. figure it would just help to know.

Re: Water pump removal

wade, make sure to put the grease in the kit on the splines of the driveshaft only (not the top). Also, use a little hardening Permatex on the pump base where it contacts the wear plate to ensure a good seal. Do not allow any sealer to get inside the pump housing. Use non-hardening Permatex on the cap screws holding the pump together and all the external fasteners holding the lower unit to the mid-section (if you ever want to get it apart again)!

Good luck.

Re: Water pump removal

2K,

Shift rod can be set to height using a tape measure. It's just a matter of knowing the height spec. from lower casing to hole in rod, +/- 1/32". But knowing where to measure from, and if it's in neutral ect. can throw off a first timer. If it backs off 1/2 turn on removal, gotta know it backed off and didn't advance cause I learned the hard way. I scribed a line on it even at the pump, but then it got pulled out so I thought it was unscrewed....... started turning it in to the scribe line, and became lost...... But thanks to the guys here on iboats..... :D
