I have a 99' 115 johnson that wont cold start unless you pop the hood and turn the red fogging lever counter clockwise. It starts and kills. I than turn the lever back and restart. It idles fine and runs fine all through the throttle range. If it sits to long I have to use the red lever. Anybody have any ideas?

Are you pushing the key in before starting? This activates a solenoid that does the same thing as turning the red knob. Push the key in, listen for a click sound, release the key and try to start.

Thanks for the quick response. I have been pushing the key in and out and holding it in. I dont hear a clicking sound though. A dealer I talked to thought it could be the ignition switch because the gauges flicker when I push the key in. I wonder if it could be the electric unit on the motor that does the priming? What ever it is seemed to happen over the winter. It may have been starting a little harder last fall but I never had to pop the hood.

If you have access to a voltmeter you can test for 12 volts at the primer. If there is 12 volts there...you will know that the primer is not working. If there is not 12 volts there...you will know that the problem lies elsewhere...prior to the primer.

TMD

If the solenoid is "frozen", you may see a brown-out of the gauge lights. Try accessing the solenoid and tapping it with a screwdriver handle while someone pushes the keyswitch in and out. If after this you do not hear the click, I would jump the solenoid with 12 vdc and see if it clicks. No click=bad solenoid. Click=bad switch or wiring.
Good luck
