Carburetor fine tuning

I just got a second hand evinrude 50hp 2-cylinder.My problem is that my engine seems like it doesnt run properly because during the liftup of the boat it sounds like its laging of air and does not have enught power.I think the carbs need fine tuning.I would like to know how am i going to tune them <br /><br />Thanx

Fine tuning can generally only be done on the low speed side...also that is dependant on the model and year of the engine.<br /><br />Do a compression test and also test the ignition. IF you pull the spark plugs and one is wet..you will know you have an ignition problem.<br /><br />Also its possible that you have green carbs. They will need to be taken apart and cleaned.<br /><br />TMD

Thnx for the tips...problem still exists<br />also this weekend i've noticed that <br />a.when my engine is worink idle the water coming out of the propeller is pitch black and smels like gasoline<br />b.Gasoline comes out from the rubber hose that is under the carbs(i think the hose i for the carb flooding).<br />c.when i clean my plugs and i put them back,i start the engine for 10 seconds and the become black and oily.<br />Thnx in advance Marinos

At a minimum, it sounds like the floats in the carburators need to be adjusted as they may be overflowing. Before starting anything major, make sure you are using fresh gas in the proper mix (50:1, for example for motors made in the '70s or '80s.)
