G'day; I'm a greenhorn - just bought a 3 HP Johnson Seahorse model JW10 Ser#1096870 going by a report in this site where a JW11 was a '55, I guess maybe mine is a 54?
First day out, it ran like a kitten, coming back in, I clipped a stump and sheared the pin (I hope!). Back home, I pulled out the cotter pin, removed the brass nut and large flatwasher - prop wiggles, but doesn't want to pull off shaft. Without any manual, I don't want to force anything. Have searched all the topics and don't see anything like my dilemma - did see good exploded views in '57 5.5 hp thread. I'm thinking that if the 3 hp set up is similar to the 5.5, the pin may have sheared but is binding on the shaft and bearing. Any suggestions on how to remove the prop and replace the pin? Any specs on pin mat'l? Someone suggested a finishing nail but I'm loathe to try that not knowing what shear strength it is compared to the real McCoy.

Many thanx in advance! jw10 1952-1954

you can use the finishing nail to tap the broken shear pin through the hole, the prop should the slide right off. if you're not sure about the strength of the new pin, buy the weakest shear pin you can find, but buy lots of them.

good luck

I would advise not using a finishing nail except in an emergency. The shear pin is designed to protect the lower unit gears, drive shaft and splines when the prop comes to a sudden stop. Shear pins are brass alloy or cast iron that cleanly shear upon impact. Nails bend and will bind, offering no protection.

Thanx cotterman! Appreciate the year info!

I went out and had another look at the assly. I rapped the back side of the prop with a hunk of wood and it started to slide off the shaft. There was the broken shear pin - a piece in one side of the prop and the bit still in the shaft. Drove it out with an appropriate sized punch - just under pin dia of .125 inch. Pin looked rusty - took a file and it acted like steel. Looked around and found a 2 1/4 long common nail - shank was .115 dia so I cut some up into 1 inch lengths. Used one for the repair and stuck a few in the tackle box along with cotter pins and a 5/8 wrench. Also stuck a few of both pins in a cavity in the handle and taped 'em up with electrical tape for emergency use.
Guess I was just a little bit too timid with the old girl!
Happy boating!!
Captain_Nemo

Just finished my reply to cotterman and saw answer from excuseme - good point re the hadrness/brittleness which as you say a nail just doesn't have. I don't suppose these things are very dear - so a trip to the nearest marina is in order for tomorrow! Oh well, I had fun playing in the garage and outta the boss's way!! :-0)

Captain_Nemo
Also as you found out, the wrong material for a shear pin makes the prop hard to get off.
Richard
