Disassembling Throttle Handle

I have a 1992 Crestliner with a 1991 Evinrude 150HP. The trim & tilt works fine at the motor, but only works "down" (not up) at the throttle button. I think I need a new switch in the throttle handle.

Is disassembling the throttle handle a big deal? I can't see how to take it apart. All the controls, wires, etc. behind the panel are too intimidating for me to take anything apart back there.
Is there a trick to taking the throttle apart simply without damaging it so I don't have to take the boat to the dealer?
Any help is appreciated. Sorry - I'm not very handy.
Thanks,

Re: Disassembling Throttle Handle

Hi Paul....

May not be your switch. Take the cover off the engine and look at the back of the engine block. There should be a black box there with a cover held on with two screws. Take the cover off and look inside. At the top of the box you'll see two little black relays. These are your up and down relays. They will pull right out of the box. Pull the relays from the connectors and switch them and try the TNT again. If the problem switch's, then the relay is at fault. If that's the case, replace. Just might as well replace both if ya do. Bout $24 apiece.

Re: Disassembling Throttle Handle

Hi Jim,
I think the relays are OK because the motor tilts up AND down using the switch at the motor? Anyway I swapped them as you suggested and the throttle button can still only tilt it down, not up.

I have a Clymer manual, but it doesn't go in to detail on the throttle lever. Any ideas where to get a better manual?
Thanks,

Re: Disassembling Throttle Handle

Hi Paul....

Take your model number and go to your local Johnny/Rude dealership and tell them you want a service manual for your engine. They can order one for ya'. Darn handy things to have around.

Takin' the handle off is no big deal. One thing I don't know is if your control is a flush mount or control box type. Can ya' give us a clue here?

Thanks....

Hi JIm,
It's a flush mount.
Seem to be no screws or anything to detach it from the panel.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: Disassembling Throttle Handle

Paul....if it's an OMC flush mount, rotate the handle to full throttle reverse. Look at the side and there should be a hole for an Allan wrench to go into. Losen the Allan screw and the handle should come off. If it aint there in reverse....try forward...LOL.

Keep us posted....Thanks.
