I have a 1970 9.5 evinrude. #9022c<br />Runs great at idle to half speed.<br />When I hit WOT it does'nt pick up RPM's.<br />All my rich/lean adjustments are perfect.<br />Carb rebuilt "TWICE", New condensers, New pionts, New plugs, Will change the plug wires Sunday evening.<br />On the carb. There is a vent hole that is open in the top of the bowl but it has a lead plug in the outside."this is on top of the bowl and comes out forward"<br />Does this need to be open to vent the bowl?<br />RUNNING OUT OF ASPRIN!

Re: 9.5 Headache

Sounds like the problem is your fuel supply.<br />Check for air leaks in your hose, run it without a filter for a minute and see what happens. In short, you should try and check for possible trouble in your fuel supply before it ever gets to the carburator.<br />Also get a squirt bottle with fuel mix. Set your engine at wot and then just squirt into the carburator mouth and see what happens. If she revs up then you know your fuel is the problem and not your electric stuff. It could be as simple as a pinched fuel line or a clogged air inlet in your fuel tank.<br />good luck.

hello.<br />55 is quite low.You should double check that and find out why it is that low.It should be around a hundred or better."No compression,no performance"

How do I figure out why it is so low?<br />I will put another gauge on it!<br /> John

I have a 9.5 out in the shop that will NOT run at 60 psi on both cylinders. I would say it is rebuild time for yours also.<br /><br />They are great little motors when they run, but when they dont run, you will learn to hate them!!!

Well Who sells a good rebuild kit? While I have it apart I also need to put some good motor mounts in her.

I dont know that there is an actual "kit" but you should be able to get everything at a John/Evinrude dealer.<br /><br />Shouldnt be too terribly expensive either.

Re: 9.5 Headache

Wonder if I can get by with just new rings and a head gasket. And not main and rod bearings?

Hello.<br />After you double check your compression. The best you can do is just open it up, see what you find and take it from there.<br />(say a little prayer)<br />Good luck.

Re: 9.5 Headache

are you checking your compression with the engine hot ?? you need to be also decarb the engine and run another compression test with another gauge if you can. check your cam follower thats in the carb linkage it rides on the cam thats on the points plate. when you look close you will see a line on the cam(thats on the plate)rotate your tiller arm throttle till the cam follower is at that line. at this time your carb throttle linkage should be tight against the cam follower. if its not then its out of sink . you have to losten the center screw on the carb linkage and push the linkage against the cam follower.make sure when you tighten the screw that the throttle does not move.its alittle tricky but not too hard. let us know how you make out

Re: 9.5 Headache

Thank you Wayne,<br />I also want to run some more compression test to rule out a head gasket. Because I had a Comp. gauge in #2 and no plug in #1. And didnt get no reading on the gauge. We thought his gauge was stuck. I'll investigate this further today.<br /> John

I think im going to drill out the lead plug in the front top of the carb bowl first to try it.<br /> John

So, one cylinder has 55# and the other zero? I wouldn't try to run this engine until some further tests are performed. (Try with a different gauge, pull head, etc) I think your problem is most unlikely to be fuel related, although that could be what did the damage in the first place. Good luck!
